Back to Church Sunday
We probably all know someone who no longer attends church. The decline of the church in our country is staggering. Of the 300 million people in the United States, fewer than 20 percent attend regularly. Research suggests that about 7.9 million people walk away each week. The number one reason why people leave church is because of a life change. A personal invitation is still the most powerful means to bringing these people back to church. Forty-one percent of those formerly churched said that they would return if a friend or acquaintance would invite them. Timothy and Concordia Lutheran churches will participate in an intentional effort to invite people back to worship. Back to Church Sunday will be Oct. 3. We will need to engage everyone in this effort. A small gift package with an invitation attached will be shared with up to 1,000 homes in our area. You will hear more about this each week as we get closer to this special day. Pray for God’s blessings on this effort to reach the unchurched in our neighborhoods.

Back to Church Sign-Up Sheet
There is a sign-up sheet in the entryway to volunteer to take packets to your neighbors the week of Sept. 23. We need to get an accurate count so we will be able to have enough packets for everyone.

Childcare Available
The nursery is staffed during both Sunday worship services and is located just inside the main school entrance in the Mother’s Day Out room. If you have a feisty toddler, feel free to drop off your little one off at the nursery.

Church Treasurer
Mick Portell has served faithfully as our Treasurer for a number of years, but needs a break. We are looking for someone with the skills and training necessary to fill this position. If you have such gifts, please contact one of the pastors. Training will be provided and a transition period is anticipated.

Food Pantry Needs
The food pantry has been very busy this summer, and as school begins this trend will continues. Please consider bringing at least one or two items with you to church each Sunday. We will continue to list items in the newsletter, but also will supply short lists in the narthex. Each list only has three items on it. Take one on your way out to help you while you are at the grocery store this week. A small sacrifice on your part could make a big difference in our community. This week’s suggestions are: whole grain pastas and noodles, low fat all purpose mixes, granola bars, powdered milk, canned fish, and other canned meat

Lutheran Women in Mission
The first meeting of the new year is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2. All women of the congregation are invited.

Auction Coming
Get ready to have a fun evening at our Caribbean themed 2010 Auction Nov. 6. Tickets will stay at the remarkably low price of $20 and will be available in late September. As always, we are in need of donations of goods, certificates, and volunteer services. You might consider giving a couple of hours of your time for gardening, cooking, window washing, babysitting ... be creative! Many people would love to bid on two hours of window washing. Some of the items already received are: St. Louis Symphony tickets, The Magic House, Missouri Botanical Garden, and Meramec Caverns. We also have give certificates to El Paisans's Restaurant, Chris' Pancake and Dining, Jackson's, and Biggies. If you have a favorite restaurant that you frequent, please take a donation letter (located the back of church) along with you next time your go out for dinner. You'll find that restaurants are happy to support the patrons who visit them. Taking your car in for an oil change? Take a donation letter along. How about making up your own basket using a central theme? A gardening basket could contain gardening tools, seeds, flower pots, and gardening gloves. An Italian feast basket might have pasta, marinara sauce, a checkered tablecloth, a bottle of wine. A children's birthday basket could have tableware, party favors, etc. The possibilities are endless ... give it a try! We have a few specific needs at this point: a doll house (we have the furniture), palm trees of any size (blow up, stand up or paper), Christmas items, and finally, someone to underwrite all or part of the hors d'oeuvres for the evening. If you're interested in planning the auction or working on any part of it, please come to a meeting at the Rall’s house (6949 Pernod) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7; or call Louise Tiemann (636-349-5354) or Mary Anne Rall (314-781-2177).

Choir Workshop
All Timothy singers and interested musicians will have the opportunity to meet with Katherine Brown, newly-appointed director of the St. Louis Women’s Chorale, for a choral workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 18. We will work on pieces which have been selected for fall worship services as Kathy discusses vocal techniques, breathing, choral musicianship skills, and healthy vocal production. Timothy singers may have the opportunity for a short, private lesson with Katherine. A light lunch will follow the workshop. Call Ted/Abby Wuerffel (314-729-1568) or the church office (314-781-8673) to register for the workshop.

Church Picnic
The annual church picnic is now held in the fall. The date for the picnic this year is Sept. 12. Please mark it on your calendar. More details are coming soon. If you are willing to help at or before the picnic, please let one of the pastors know or call the church office.
